Simon Swee and the Sun City Commitment
Simon Swee, Managing Director of Sun City Maintenance, gestures towards the city’s skyline from his modest office. It’s a view that reflects the company’s journey – a steady climb from a remarkable origin to a vital part of Singapore’s environmental services. “We started with just one client,” he recounts, “but even then, we knew the importance of our work.”
“It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come,” Swee reflects, pausing to consider the early days. “Sun City began with just two employees and a single contract. Eventually we operated out of a small office, and every task was a hands-on effort. But even then, we were driven by a vision to provide reliable and quality service.”
Sun City has grown, employing approaching 1,000 employees, managing a diverse portfolio that includes commercial, industrial, and residential cleaning, as well as waste management and recycling. Its white vehicles, a common sight across the island, are a testament to their dedication to maintaining Singapore’s cleanliness.
“Our work is often unseen,” Swee acknowledges, “but it’s essential to the city’s functioning.” He emphasizes the responsibility Sun City holds, ensuring the hygiene of buildings and managing waste efficiently. “We understand we’re serving the community,” he states simply.
Swee’s leadership is grounded in direct engagement. He regularly visits job sites, talking with employees and clients. “Direct feedback is crucial,” he explains. “It allows us to address issues promptly and improve our services.”
Sun City has embraced technology to enhance efficiency. Sensor-based monitoring and automation are now part of their operations. “We’re always looking for ways to improve,” Swee says. “It’s about providing better services and creating a more sustainable approach.”
Sun City also actively participates in community initiatives, partnering with organizations to promote corporate social responsibility. “We believe in giving back,” Swee states.
As the day ends, Swee’s focus remains on the task at hand. “Our mission is to maintain high standards of cleanliness and environmental responsibility,” he concludes. “We’re here to serve Singapore.”
He notes the changing weather outside, a reminder of the 24/7 nature of their work. “We’re always monitoring,” he says, “ready to respond when needed.”
“It’s a round-the-clock commitment,” I remark.
“Yes,” he confirms, “every day of the year.”
